Massage Cancellation Policy
If you are unable to attend your massage appointment, we ask that you give at least 36 hours notice to our staff by calling 510.817.2229 or contacting us. If at least 36 hours notice is given, you will have the option to reschedule. If a 36 hour notification is not received, your fee will not be refunded. If you are in labor or in the first week postpartum and forget to call, we can bend on that.

We pride ourselves at being attentive to your needs, detail-oriented strategic thinkers (no one-size-fits-all rub-down here!), and students of the human body with a strong appetite for continued learning of massage and other bodywork techniques.
It’s important for us to provide bodywork that works for you — be it helping you with that nagging ache, bring a sense of peace and quiet for your mind and body, or providing that restorative, nurturing touch you need. We welcome open communication about your needs so we can best support you and adjust in the moment.
And, if we think you need a collaborative approach to address a physical or emotional issue you are working through, we’re happy to refer to and/or work side-by-side with chiropractors, personal trainers, yoga instructors or other providers to support you.

Prenatal massage uses techniques designed to address some of the less savory aspects of being pregnant. The advantages of massage during pregnancy and postpartum have been well-documented in the research: reduced muscle and joint pain, reduced swelling, increased circulation, improved breathing and digestion, stress-reduction, and relaxation (to name a few). And, it feels so darn good!

Postpartum massage has many of the same benefits as prenatal massage, plus helps reduce the strain of breastfeeding and holding the baby so much, can assist in abdominal recovery, and offer an important opportunity to reconnect with yourself in what may be a rare moment to focus only on yourself, your new life, and your physical body.

Our Deep Tissue/ Functional Massage pulls from various techniques to facilitate improved musculo-skeletal function. Tapping into Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Myofascial Release, Acupressure, Trigger Point Therapy, and/ or Neuro-muscular reeducation, the Massage Therapist addresses your specific issues, engaging both superficial and deep layers of muscle and connective tissue.
Note: While this body work can be very relaxing, it may require that you are a proactive participant in parts of your care.
This is our feel good, long-stroke, mellow-music “take me away” massage. It draws from various massage techniques, mainly Swedish Massage, Cranio-Sacral, Lymphatic Drainage and may encourage deep breathing and quieting your mind and body. This is a “cell phone off” kind of massage, so you can unplug and unwind for awhile. You might even keep the phone off for a bit after and go for a mellow walk—Lake Merritt isn’t too far away.
Make it a date and spend a little down time together enjoying massages — then, go ahead, enjoy a meal or drink in the ‘hood! Grand Ave. has so much to offer and you can indulge yourself every now and then. Just watch out, you may find yourselves only talking about your kids. (It’s okay, we do it, too.)
Massage services are provided in our Wellness Studio next door to the main Then Comes Baby Center, unless arranged otherwise. Meet us at the main center (3657 Grand Ave.) and we’ll walk next door together.
The best advice we can give is to do your best to arrive about 10-15 minutes early so you can find parking, grab a cup of tea or water, use the restroom, and be brought into your massage at your scheduled time. If it’s your first visit it’s best to fill out the paperwork before arriving, or come earlier. In order to respect your time — and the time of our other clients — we run a tight-ship and start and end on time (most of the time — hey, nobody is perfect).
Other than that, just think about what you are hoping from in your time with your therapist. Know that we’re not mind-readers, so if you are hoping for something different, you just need to speak up! It won’t hurt our feelings — really!
Yes, yes, and yes! We make specific adaptations to support your body appropriately and are mindful to proactively avoid inappropriate acupressure techniques in pregnancy. And, if you have any underlying health conditions, like a known blood-clotting disorder or neuropathy, please let us know so we can adapt accordingly. Nope! While all of our massage therapists are have a specialization in working with women in pregnancy and as a new parent, we know that everyone can use a good massage. If you, a partner, or friend would like a massage, feel free to talk to us about what your needs are and how we can best help. Whether it’s a relaxing “take-me-away” kind of massage or some real strategic body work to address specific needs, we aim to please!
Each massage therapist is licensed by the City of Oakland and/ or by the State of California. In addition, we all have advanced training in prenatal/ postpartum massage, plus specialized training in the areas of interest/ speciality of the massage therapist. Each therapist is also committed to maintaining professional excellence by pursuing continuing education each year in an area of mutual interest of the therapist and Then Comes Baby.
Only if you want to! We want you to feel comfortable in your own body, so only feel the need to “prepare” for us if you know that it will help you relax. Otherwise, we’re happy with you just the way you are. (We may wash your feet, though, so street dirt doesn’t get mixed into your massage lotion/ oil).
Please feel to speak up about what is important to you. Each massage therapist has their “favorite” tools to work with — some prefer a lotion over an oil, for instance — but the only thing we are committed to is making sure you are comfortable. We do make a point to use unscented oils and lotions free of any of chemicals or other unsavory things nobody wants rubbed over their body. Ditto for candles. Essential oils can be enjoyed by suggestion or request only.
