The Breastfeeding Clinic may be right for you if:
- You are in your first month postpartum
- Your baby was born full-term
- You are comfortable nursing in a small-group setting
And you:
- Want hands-on breastfeeding help
- Think you need small “tweaks” to get on-track
- Need help comfortably holding and feeding your baby
- Have breast or nipple pain while nursing
- Think you are engorged
- Want to learn hand-expression
- Want to learn how to use your pump (bring it if so!)
The Breastfeeding Lunch & Learn may be right for you if you want to meet other moms, check your baby’s weight, and if you have questions about things like:
- Understanding your baby’s cues, sleep, and crying
- Choosing a pump or using a breast pump
- Feeding your baby and getting sleep yourself
- Working through other people’s “stuff” about breastfeeding
- Taking medications while nursing
- Your nutrition while nursing
- Introducing a bottle
- Introducing solid foods
- Going back to work (basic questions, otherwise check out our Class on that)
Note: there is not a formal agenda for the class — everyone asks questions and topics come up organically.
A Private Lactation Consult may be right for you for different reasons (this is not an exhaustive list). If you:
- Have pain while breastfeeding – in the nipple or the breast.
- Need one-one-one help comfortably holding your baby
- Don’t hear your baby swallowing during feedings (after the first few days)
- Are concerned about your milk supply
- Think you have plugged ducts and/or mastitis
- Think your baby has a “tongue-tie”
- See your baby’s cheeks dimple in when nursing
- Routnely hear a clicking sound when nursing (not to be confused with the sound of swallowing)
- Have had a breast reduction or augmentation and are having troubles or haven’t created a breastfeeding plan with an IBCLC
- Have symptoms of yeast overgrowth/ thrush (common if you had antibiotics recently)
If your baby:
- Was born before the end of the 37th week of pregnancy (and was recently born or transitioning to breastfeeding)
- Has fewer than three stools per day after 3 days OR fewer than six wet diapers a day after 6 days (in the first ~6 weeks of life)
- Has jaundice (or recently has been treated for it)
- Is having weight gain difficulties – losing 10% or more of birth weight, not returning to birth weight by 7-10 days old, or not gaining ~1oz/ day (on average) once she has began to regain weight.
- If your baby is not waking to feed at least 8-12 times/ day
- Takes a LOOONG time feeding (regularly over 45 or so minutes, some would say regularly over 30 minutes)
- Takes a really short time to feed, just a few minutes, in the first month
